President of CEPEJ Ramin Gurbanov was thanked for reforms in judicial system in Latvia

On 1 November 2019, the Congress of Judges of Latvia was held in Sigulda. Latvian President Egils Levits welcomed the participants and made recommendations to the judges.

It should be noted that the European Commission for the efficiency of justice of the Council of Europe (CEPEJ) in 2017–2019 conducted large-scale reforms in line with European standards with the involvement of experts in order to improve the judicial system in Latvia, create electronic services in this area, strengthen citizens’ faith in courts, ensure transparency of courts to improve the business environment, as well as reforms in the field of mediation and legal assistance.

Given the positive results of these reforms, the head of state received the head of the European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice, Ramin Gurbanov and thanked him for the work done.

At the annual meeting of judges with the participation of all Latvian judges, Deputy Prime Minister of Latvia, Minister of Justice Janis Bordans, President of the European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice Ramin Gurbanov and President of the Supreme Court and the Judicial Council of Latvia Ivars Bichkovich also spoke.

Later, the meeting discussed the effectiveness and quality of justice, assessment of judicial activity and disciplinary responsibility, their training and deontology, access to justice for citizens and entrepreneurs, as well as the selection of new members of the Council of Judges of Latvia.

During the visit, CEPEJ President, our compatriot Ramin Gurbanov held bilateral meetings with the president of the Supreme Court and the Judicial Council of Latvia, as well as with the minister of justice of Latvia to discuss a new project that will be implemented in 2020-2021 years. An extensive press-conference with the participation of the president of CEPEJ and the justice minister Latvia was held to inform the Latvian public.
